How the UIN checker reads the French register

This page explains, for the curious and for professionals, how the tool « UIN checker » reaches its result: the texts applied, the sources and the limits.

Go to the tool

The checker finds the company by its SIREN, the nine-digit French company number, then reads every line of ADEME's public register whose establishment identifier starts with that SIREN. It shows the unique identification numbers (UIN, « IDU » in French) found, grouped by EPR category, with the date and time of the lookup. ADEME is the French environment agency; EPR stands for extended producer responsibility.

Sources

Processing, step by step

  1. Reading the entry. Nine digits make a SIREN; fourteen digits make a SIRET (an establishment number), whose first nine digits give the SIREN. The check digit is verified before any lookup. A web address is refused with a message: the SIREN appears in the site's legal notice.
  2. Company name. The checker queries the company search API and offers up to six companies. You choose; nothing is inferred on your behalf.
  3. Register. The query runs on the Identifiant_societe field with the SIREN as a prefix, which covers every establishment and former company names. Up to 1,000 lines are read.
  4. Grouping. Lines are grouped by the register's EPR category code (EMPAP, EEE, TLC and so on), translated into the category name. Each group lists its UINs and the company names under which they are registered.
  5. Output sentence. One wording only: the number of EPR categories, out of all categories, that have a UIN in the register for this SIREN. It states a fact; it does not assess the company.

Cache and storage

Answers from the register and the API are kept in memory for 24 hours to limit calls. Searches are not logged and are not linked to any person. The rate is limited to 30 searches per minute per address.

Limits

  • The register reflects what producer responsibility organisations (PROs) have sent to ADEME. There is a delay between joining a PRO and the UIN appearing.
  • A missing UIN does not prove a breach: the company may not be the producer, or may be registered under another group company's SIREN.
  • A UIN that is present says nothing about reports and payments.
  • Companies established outside France have no SIREN and cannot be looked up here.
  • ADEME does not document every category code in the register. The checker shows unknown codes as they are.

Why this wording

The register is public, but what it says about a third-party company must remain a statement of fact. The checker never writes « non-compliant » or « in breach ». To find out whether a company selling into France from abroad needs a French EPR representative, see EPR representative in France.
